Requiem for a Gypsy

Michael Genelin (author); REQUIEM FOR A GYPSY; Soho Press (Fiction: Mystery) $25.00 ISBN: 9781569479579

Byline: Elizabeth BreauJana learns that Bogan, the ostensible target of the shooting, has disappeared. On excursions into Germany, Hungary, Austria, and France, she uncovers a satisfying abundance of clues, corpses, and collaborators that will seduce readers into ignoring weeknight bedtimes. A dead Turk, an unidentified hit-and-run victim in Paris, and a prize more valuable than jewels or currency prove irresistible teasers in this intricately developed plot. When police commander Jana Matinova arrives at a lavish birthday party for financier Oto Bogan she glimpses a notorious killer exiting only moments before gunfire erupts. Jana's boss dismisses her siting of Makine, mostly because the thought of hunting him is so daunting, but Jana is undeterred. Characteristically dissatisfied with hasty conclusions and her colleagues' lack of initiative in post-Soviet Slovakia, Jana locates the murder weapons that the "official" investigation missed and gains permission to conduct her own off-the-record pursuit. This fourth installation in the Commander Jana Matinova series is an engaging read, full of deftly drawn characters who must somehow see through a mazy reality that conceals the contrast of light and dark in shadows, behind screens, and in the rooted passions of the human heart. The ongoing legacy of the Soviet Union forms the backdrop of Jana's life. Her mother was a fanatically devout Communist Party official, and her willful blindness to brutality and corruption spurs her daughter, in an ostensibly minor subplot, to yield to the desperate pleas of a Roma couple who do not believe that their son's death was accidental. Jana's sensitivity to the contrast between the gypsies' dehumanization as ethnic minorities and the anguish felt by those who lose loved ones is the basis for the book's title. The tragedy Jana uncovers here is more viscerally human than the complex Nazi-era blood feud that motivates the main plot.

Bachelorette Party Ideas That Won't Leave You In The Doghouse

Planning a bachelorette party should center around the personality of the bachelorette. Is she fun and outgoing or is she more quiet and prefer not to be in the spotlight? Also, with the traditional bachelorette party, would she be comfortable with the more risqu, or would it be offensive? These are all important questions, which will determine the success of your bachelorette party.

In the case of something like poison, you might need to find out how it was administered. Was it something the victim ate or drank? Was the poison injected?"Motive" answers the "why" question. Why was the victim killed?"Means" is probably the easiest of the three to determine. By "means", I mean how the murder was carried out and usually an examination of the body will tell you this. Typical examples include stabbing, shooting, poisoning, drowning and so on.The secret to solving murder mysteries is in determining three things, the "Holy Trinity" of detection: Means, motive and opportunity.Motive can be both the easiest and hardest of the Holy Trinity to solve. Sometimes there are lots of people with a good motive to kill, and sometimes it can be hard to find anyone with any kind of motive at all.Is the bachelorette known for any particular hobby or activity? How about an all-inclusive sport such as bowling or ice-skating? It may have better participation than if the bachelorette is known for sky diving or extreme sports!I hope these bachelorette party ideas helped spark some fun ideas for your upcoming celebration! Is a happy marriage in the cards? Use a fortune telling theme complete with palm readings and crystal balls. You can choose activities centered at home, or out in the community. Community gathering places include the traditional restaurant and bars. Increasingly popular are creative outings such as spas, sporting events, camping, and amusement parks. So, the first thing you should ask is "Who benefits?" Who has the most to gain from the victim's death? And if it's not immediately obvious, the you are going to have to talk to everyone.Hold a couples party and play the Newlywed Game to see who's most in tune with each other. If nothing else, whenever you talk to one of the other guests at a murder mystery party, you should ask them who they think killed the victim. Someone will have a clue as to the identity of the murderer, but without asking absolutely everyone, you might never find them.So while these tips are particularly useful for anyone taking on the role of the detective, they will also help anyone else trying to solve the murder. (They may also help the murderer cover their trail...)Sometimes it's not always easy to work out how the victim died - particularly if there are other wounds or marks. Also, the murder might be disguised as an accident.Pamper the bachelorette. You can pamper her with a day at the spa complete with manicures, pedicures, and massages. It can take place at the spa itself, or create a pajama party for in-home pampering.

I hope these bachelorette party ideas helped spark some fun ideas for your upcoming celebration!

Solving The Murder at a Murder Mystery Party

If you are invited to a murder mystery party you have the chance to act out the role of your favourite detective - whether it's Miss Marple, Sherlock Holmes or Inspector Morse.

Here, then, are my tips on solving a murder mystery:
  • Find a piece of paper and write down three headings: Motive, Means and Opportunity. As the party progresses and you learn more about the murder, write down what you learn on the paper under the appropriate heading.
  • Keep a checklist of everyone present and work through them, one by one. Most murder mystery parties have a list of characters who are present, so you can use that to make sure that you don't miss anyone.
(And even if it is immediately obvious, you may still have to talk to everyone as the murderer isn't always the person with the most obvious motive. Things are rarely as straight-forward as that!)Opportunity also means being in the right place and time to commit the murder. Once you know where and when the dirty deed was committed, you can eliminate from your questioning anyone with a concrete alibi.Murder mystery party with a honeymooning script. Purchase murder mystery scripts or use a local murder mystery company to host the event.Gambling on a winner? Choose a casino night for an easy to put together bachelorette party.Board games or card game championshipsYou need to watch for the various tricks and twists that can confuse things further. These can include the misdirected murder (where the victim wasn't the intended victim at all but just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time) and murder-by-proxy (where the murderer isn't the one with most to gain, but is a misguided friend or servant). Here are some activity ideas:Activity IdeasOnce you have determined the means, you should have more avenues of investigation. For example, if the victim was shot, who has access to a gun? This line of questioning brings us to the next in the Holy Trinity: opportunity.Which brings us to motive.Hire a belly dancer or salsa dancer to give lessons and give the bachelorette a little spice for her honeymoon. Everyone will have a good laugh as they try out their new skills!Bachelor and bachelorette parties are associated with strip clubs and limo rides. There are also many creative "PG-13" ideas to make it fun for all!Create a time capsule to be opened in five years. Include some of her cherished pre-marriage items and a questionnaire about what she thinks marriage will be like. For example, "Who (bachelor or bachelorette) will there be "more of to love (weight gain)" in five years?" Make a video of the party to include in her time capsule. While many murder mystery parties have a role specifically for the detective, everyone can join in the hunt for the murderer. Sometimes the games are written so that even the murderer doesn't know that they have committed the crime - so they can join in the fun as well."Opportunity" refers to the timing and planning of the murder, rather than the actual method of killing. In the case of a poisoning, for example, it means having the appropriate access to deliver the poison - such as in a bedtime drink, a favourite chocolate or whatever.

10 Tips For Bringing Your Event To Life

Your job as an event planner doesnt stop with the meeting in the company boardroom. You may be call upon to organize an employee appreciation event, an awards dinner, a product launch, the celebration of a company milestone, a gala recognizing a longtime employees retirement, an incentive event for the companys sales force, a fundraising event, a holiday celebrationthe list goes on and on.

These types of affairs differ from your typical corporate business meeting, and you face unique issues and pitfalls when planning them. Rave program reviews are generally the result of the blood, sweat, and tears you devote to the project. A well-designed and well-orchestrated event is analogous to a good stage production. Its all about getting your act together and performing the right show for the right audience. The program plan you choose stems from the purpose and participants. Your four main considerations include:
  1. What is the main emphasis of the program educational, business or social?
  2. What are your financial criteria generate revenue, break even, or be a company expense?
  3. What are your participants expectations?
  4. What is the optimum ration of educational, business, and social programming?
They had married two weeks earlier in Mumbai, India in a lavish Hindu ceremony that was attended by relatives and close friends. Anni was to move in with Shrien when they returned back to the United Kingdom from a four-day safari in the Kruger National Park and a relaxing stay in the five-star comforts of the Cape Grace hotel in Cape Town. What chances will a husband take to validate his suspicion that his wife is cheating on him? Hecule Poirot, the master of psychology and human behavior, is almost killed in his quest to solve the murder of the suspecting husband. The center of the wife's attention and her suspected lover is obviously implicated and arrested for the crime. The Tragedy at Marsdon Manor - 3 Stars (Good)Timing is everything. The decision about when to hold your event is determined in large part by what type of event it is. Ask yourself, is the event better suited for the day or evening? Do you want to hold it during the week or on a weekend? If your event doesnt have a deadline, would it be best to hold it during a specific season or time of year? Make sure to check that your event doesnt overlap with any religious holidays, and its probably best to avoid scheduling during major sporting events.Visit:Because he is long on theory and short on evidence, Poirot concocts a really scary scene wherein the victim returns from death to confront his executioner.http://www.gopetition.com/petition/41710.htmlTip #10: Hire The Right TalentEven more upset is Chief Inspector Japp (Philip Jackson) whose job is on the line since there have been three recent thefts of precious jewelry and the thief is still at large. Japp is given only a couple of days to solve the case; he sees his livelihood slipping away as Poirot idles away his time with the Countess.Tip #4: Set The StageSee how Poirot finds and returns the stolen goods only to have the thief escape into the night. These and other questions are put to rest when Hercule Poirot realizes the elder Maltravers did not succumb due to a recent operation, but rather from a cold-blooded execution. Poirot, however, does not have sufficient evidence to convict the murderer.Dont consider a theme unless you are prepared to follow it through your entire event. Dont limit it to a few posters on the walls, which just add lip service rather than real ambiance. For the most impact, integrate it before, during and after the event. Reflect your theme in your invitations and in any party favors that guests take home. Your theme should complement the tone and content of your event. Advise speakers and discuss with them how they can incorporate, but not overuse it in their remarks. A few extras to consider when integrating your theme:
  • Make sure the theme is general enough that it is unlikely to offend anyone, and that it is meaningful to your group.
  • Develop a meaningful slogan or message to go along with the theme to add a little extra when you promote the event.
  • Consider having a special logo designed to enhance the theme and its possible message.
The first order of business is to decide whether to hold your event indoors or outdoors. However, outdoor events have several major considerations, the elements being number one on the list. Think tents, portable flooring, electric generators, and space heaters, in addition to a well thought out contingency plan. Also, be aware that speeches and audiovisual presentations are notoriously difficult to stage outdoors. The brutal murder of Anni Hindocha shocked South Africa and as the news spread abroad, everyone expressed sympathy for Shrien at the tragic loss of his wife. The taxi driver arrested for the murder, in his Court testimony, alleged that Shrien Dewani was the mastermind behind Annis murder and had paid him money to arrange it to look like a robbery gone horribly wrong.Creating a theme for your event helps make it easier to organize food, dcor, and other accessories, such as giveaway items. Select a theme that fits your participants. Consider choosing from the following categories:
  • Fashion: The Roaring Twenties or An Evening at Ascot
  • History: The Garden of Eden or A Renaissance Fair
  • Politics: Fourth of July Celebrations or Womens Lib (political and historical)
  • Popular culture: Wizard of Ox or An Evening with Dr. Seuss
  • The arts: An Italian Affair or A Night at the Oscars
It remains to be seen if the Court extradites Shrien to South Africa and help the local authorities solve the murder mystery of Anni and deliver justice to her shocked and grieving family and friends.Tip #6: Create A Memorable Theme

As you think about hiring your entertainment talent, find out where and for whom theyve previously performed. Make certain that you view a demo video. Watch for the quality of their performance and the audience reaction. Check out their references and ask some pertinent questions:

  • Would you hire them again?
  • How flexible, reliable, and easy to work with were they?
  • How would you rate their act?
  • What do they do well?
  • What part of their act could use improvement?
  • What were the demographics of your audience? (You want to make sure that this act would be a good fit for your participants.)

Poirot - "The Double Clue" Exposes Hercule's Facade as the Thief Melts His Heart

(Editor's Note: These made-for-TV movies are among the 41 murder mystery novels originally aired by PBS involving the proper, obsessive little Belgian inspector Hercule Poirot. The character of Poirot (played to perfection by David Suchet) was created by the famous British author Agatha Christie, who wrote her first Poirot novel in 1920 at the age of 30 and her last Poirot novel in 1975, 55 years later and a year before her death in 1976.)

South African police investigations have shown that the brutal murder shooting was not just a random case and it was a planned hit. The driver has become a state witness and the South African authorities want to question Shrien about his alleged involvement in his wifes murder. As he has refused to voluntarily go back to South Africa, the South African police have requested the UK court to extradite him and help them solve the murder mystery of Anni Hindocha. One key to a successful special event is to seek out entertainment or decorations that are unique and fun to spark excitement and add the right ambiance. Think outside the box and consider all sorts of amusements strolling musicians, magicians, chefs demonstrations, palm readersanything out of the ordinary. Novelty is the key to your success. Keep in mind that entertainment that rave about can also come in the form of an elaborate coffee bar or startlingly beautiful champagne fountain. Remember to check all decorating plans with the venue in advance because many have restrictions on what they allow. For example, many establishments forbid helium balloons.Participants look forward to the entertainment segment of a program. They want to have fun, enjoy themselves, and let their hair down, particularly after stressful and demanding sessions. So guess what? Your participants stress reliever now becomes your stress maker. You have a true responsibility to choose the right entertainment for your group. Some options include the following:
  • Music: Your choices include a band with or without singers, a soloist (instrumental or vocal), a disc jockey, or even karaoke.
  • Spectacle: Consider hiring a magician, juggler, comedian, mime or hypnotist.
  • Theater: Arrange a dinner theater performance, a one-person act, a murder-mystery experience, or corporate theater (which involves using professional or amateur actors to dramatize a companys image, a new product, or the history of an organization).
  • Games: Involve your participants by planning individual games, such as a treasure hunt, or an event with a game show format, such as Jeopardy or Hollywood Squares.
  • Video or slide show: A picture is worth a thousand words. For a retirement dinner, consider creating a slide show featuring the guest of honors accomplishments. For a sales meeting, provide a video demonstration of a new product.
Poirot (David Suchet) is called to investigate the theft of an irreplaceable piece of jewelry that occurred during a social gathering at the home of wealthy collector Marcus Hardman (David Lyon).Denying the allegation, Shrien said he handed over his 2,000 Rado watch, digital camera, 500 in cash, mobile phone and his wifes jewelry that included her engagement ring to the hijackers. While trying to save his sobbing wife, he was thrown out of the car along with the driver uninjured. He adds that he banged on nearby shanties to raise an alarm but nobody came to help him.http://www.newscollective.com/blog/?p=3287Fairytale wedding cut short abruptlyTip #5: Create The Right AtmosphereThe Double Clue - 4 Stars (Excellent)The dramatization of "The Double Clue" by Anthony Horowitz in 1991strays somewhat from the original novel written by Agatha Christie in 1923, but remains one of the best Hercule Poirot episodes ever. But Poirot cannot find the answer to two key questions: Why would he kill the husband, put him in Spanish chest and leave the body there while conducting a party with several guests in the same room, knowing the body could be easily discovered? And if he did not do it, who did and why?An online petition requesting Shriens extradition has been started, click here to sign it.Tip #3: Consider Unique EnvironmentsTaxi driver alleges Shrien wanted his wife deadPoirot's assistant—Captain Arthur Hastings (Huge Fraser)—and personal secretary—Miss Lemon (Pauline Moran)—pretty much make fools of themselves investigating the case while Poirot is smitten and spends all of his time with Countess Rossakoff. Both Hastings and Miss Lemon are visibly upset because the precise, orderly, rational, meticulous little Belgian detective is so out of character. And the question that is perplexing most South African observers is why Shrien was allowed to walk away from the hijacking so easily especially when he could identify the hijackers to the police. In most hijacking cases, the couple are beaten up badly and robbed and the woman is abused in front of the husband. If fortunate, the victims are left by the roadside while the unlucky victims are killed and their vehicle set on fire to eliminate all evidence.

Will Justice Be Delivered To Anni Hindocha?

Newlyweds Anni Hindocha and Shrien Dewani were honeymooning in South Africa when a carjacking went horribly wrong and cut short her life on 13 November 2010. Anni was shot in the neck while Shrien was thrown out of the car unscathed.

However, as the South African police started their investigations into the murder mystery, a different picture started to emerge.Tip #9: Entertain The GroupTip #2: Map Out A LocationHotel meeting rooms can get old very quickly and the thought of a unique environment can immediately add interest and excitement. Consider retreat centers, cruise ships or yachts, museums, stately home, sporting venues, and theaters. Realize that many of these venues work well for special functions, but they dont necessarily have adequate meeting facilities and equipment. Make sure you do your homework beforehand and abide by the Meeting Planners Golden Rule - never select a venue without having seen it in person!Tip #7: Integrate The Theme This article has been written by Rohan Dias, Senior Content Editor at NewsCollective.Poirot finds the answers to these questions far more difficult than successfully concealing an ongoing illicit affair. By pushing his gray cells a little harder, Poirot discovers a dastardly execution by a person with no conscience and no remorse.Tip #1: Decide When To Stage Your EventA photographer is a great addition to almost any event. Guests appreciate a visual reminder of the fun time they had at your affair. Arranging to have family portraits taken at an employee appreciation event shows your employees that you care about them as individuals. Guests at more formal affairs enjoy having their pictures taken while theyre dressed up for a night out. Decide whether you want a photographer to roam among your guests taking candid shots, to set up in a central location to take posed shots, or both. The following are 10 tips that zero in on the nitty gritty elements that can help earn your efforts glowing reviews (and make your mom really proud of you). As you begin each planning program, a key question to ask yourself is, how can each activity engage the participants interest? But in the Anni Hindocha murder case, everything was done differently.
When a young, beautiful artist—Susan Maltravers (Geraldine Alexander)—marries a much older wealthy owner of a manor—Jonathan Maltravers (Ian McCulloch), could there be a hidden motive besides love? What if a love triangle developed? What if the death of a young girl on the same manor grounds years ago returned to haunt the young wife, driving her out of her mind?Only four guests are possible suspects—a millionaire who could buy the missing piece in a heartbeat; a middle-aged society lady who is on hard times; a young, effeminate agent for Hardman; and a Russian refugee, Countess Vera Rossakoff (Kika Markham). When leaving South Africa for the UK, Shrien said that the idea of visiting Gugulethu was his wifes as she wanted to see the real South Africa and he had no idea that a mere visit to the shantytown would kill his wife.Copyright © 2009 Ed BagleyMiss Lemon is distraught. She has been in love with Hercule forever and Poirot never even notices her. Poirot finds the Countess to be the most extraordinary woman he has ever met, a brilliant thief who is the match of his brilliant mind. Will Poirot be able to experience an impluse and yet not act on it?
